ABSTRACT

Turner syndrome is usually accompanied with various anomalies. Congenital urological and renal abnormalities are often associated with this syndrome. The occurrence of glomerulonephritis is uncommon. An 18-year-old woman showed fatigue and profound proteinuria. She had been diagnosed with Turner syndrome in her age of 15. The kidney biopsy specimen examined by light microscopy, immunofluorescence and electron microscopic examination revealed focal segmental glomerulosclerosis. This is the first case report of focal segmental glomerulosclerosis in turner syndrome in South Korea.

ABSTRACT

Craniopharyngiomas are rare primary intracranial tumors. Despite their benign histological appearance, they are often associated with an unfavorable prognosis. The typical manifestations upon diagnosis are headache, visual impairment, polyuria/polydypsia, growth retardation, disturbance of pubertal development, and significant weight gain. The treatment options include radical surgery or radiotherapy, or a combination of these modalities. Slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) is the most common adolescent hip disorder. SCFE occurs when the capital femoral epiphysis displaces posteriorly on the femoral neck at the level of the physis. The etiology of SCFE is thought to be multifactorial and may include obesity, growth surges, and less common endocrine disorders. The related endocrine disorders include hypothyroidism, growth hormone supplementation, hypogonadism, and panhypopituitarism. Reported herein is a case of panhypopituitarism caused by craniopharyngioma combined with SCFE.

ABSTRACT

Deep vein thrombosis is a predisposing condition for pulmonary embolism, which can be fatal. Usually, deep vein thrombosis is found in the lower extremities, but it can also occur in the upper extremities. The prevalence of upper extremity deep vein thrombosis appears to be increasing, particularly due to the increased use of indwelling central venous catheters. Pulmonary embolism is present in up to one-third of patients with upper extremity deep vein thrombosis. Upper extremity deep vein thrombosis is an increasingly important clinical entity, with the potential for considerable morbidity. Here, we report a case of upper extremity deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism in a severely obese man who was successfully treated with anticoagulants.

ABSTRACT

Empyema necessitatis is a rare complication of an empyema. Although the incidence is thought to be decreased in the post-antibiotic era, immunocompromised patients such as patients with chronic kidney disease on dialysis are still at a higher risk. A 56-year-old woman on peritoneal dialysis presented with an enlarging mass on the right anterior chest wall. The chest computed tomography scan revealed an empyema necessitatis and the histopathologic findings revealed a granulomatous inflammation with caseation necrosis. The patient was treated with anti-tuberculous medication.
